Spirit Ball | SC Maritime Foundation

Several years ago, when I was still working for the South Carolina Aquarium, a tall ship with humble beginnings in neighboring Ansonborough Field was launched in Charleston Harbor. Today, this gorgeous ship, The Spirit of South Carolina, is a vessel for learning and leadership. The SC Maritime Foundation has now served more than 6,000 students with its varied programming, including after-school programs for disadvantaged students, summer programs and week-long sailing adventures.

I recently had the pleasure of photographing the 2010 Spirit Ball, the Maritime Foundation’s annual fundraiser. This event has grown each year, and guests of the black-tie affair were treated to fantastic auction items, delicious food and wine, and a great dance band in the new ballroom at the Charleston Marriott (on Lockwood, near the Joe Riley Stadium). Best of all, several of the students who have benefited from their Spirit of South Carolina experiences were able to share with hundreds of donors what the program has meant to them. It was a wonderful evening!
