Spring fling at Boone Hall in Mount Pleasant, SC, Family photogrWhat a pleasure it was to photograph this beautiful family again! The Lanes are as easygoing as they are coordinated. Lindsay does well with her last-minute photo session wardrobe shopping, don’t you think? Denim and a touch of color are just the ticket for standing out in this green and woodsy location.

Ariana, now two years old, was not sure what to make of our great outdoor experience when we drove down the oak-lined driveway for Boone Hall family photos. (Check out the first photo below to see the tentative toddler.) Thankfully, after a little tree climbing and a few spring flings holding her parents’ hands, her twinkly eyes and big grins took over, and we had a blast. She plucked weeds, played peek-a-boo and investigated oyster shells, which is proof that my Boone Hall photography pass makes it so easy for kids to be kids.

If you don’t mind swatting a few no-see-ums during a Lowcountry magic hour, contact me to schedule your own portrait session at this storied location made famous in “The Notebook.” See more Boone Hall sessions, including wedding-related ones, by clicking here.

  • Mercedes - What a darling family! I love this session so much. That little one is so precious with her big smile and flowery knees 🙂ReplyCancel

    • Jen - Thank you, Mercedes! They are a beautiful family, and I’m glad I could document them around Charleston before they move back to the midwest.ReplyCancel

  • alex - Love this session! What a joy it must be to photograph at this venue so often! I remember visiting on a SMOLDERING May day last year!ReplyCancel

    • Jen - Thanks, Alex! It’s a great spot a few miles from the house. I don’t like shooting in the same place all the time, so I’ve skipped spending the money on the photographer’s pass some years, but it’s hard to resist the mossy oaks and creekside splendor. Such a fun field trip for families, too, especially when kids may start out cranky. They always come around as we explore this location!ReplyCancel

363-Outdoorsy-Edisto-Island-engagement-photography-Carolina-Photosmith-Given my fondness for the Lowcountry’s magnificent trees, you can imagine I was pretty excited when Meg and Danny secured me to photograph their spring wedding at historic McLeod Plantation. Meg used to work for the SC Department of Natural Resources, and she’s currently employed by the Forest Service in Virginia, so it’s safe to say she may have an even greater love for trees. Naturally, she and Danny wanted to incorporate some of her fave flora in their engagement photos, so we planned to shoot at her favorite Lowcountry escape, Botany Bay Plantation. As is recommended with this special wildlife management area, she called ahead to make sure there were no planned hunts or closures during the time they took off to drive down from Virginia. We were excited to get the thumbs-up, and I just eager to visit Botany Bay again with clients, since I’d been before with family.

Well, what is that old adage about the best laid plans going awry? Ironically, Mother Nature had other ideas, and after I scooped the couple (following Meg’s hair and makeup session), we drove to Botany Bay, only to find the gates locked with a sign referencing the dirt roads being too damaged from all the autumn rains. We snapped a few photos beneath the sunlit canopy of twisty oaks and begged a couple of passersby for more info. We were told Botany Bay would probably be open again the next day, but Meg and Danny had plans in other parts of SC for the rest of the weekend.

Meanwhile, Meg was talking to a charming Botany Bay volunteer who was heading home, and she offered to make a call to a friend to explain our unusual predicament. Can you believe we were thinking of the same place? Mrs. Murray at Cypress Trees Plantation was kind enough to let us pop over for some portraits. Cypress Trees is a beautiful piece of property and hosts a handful of weddings each year.

Love and surprises seem like a good blog post for Valentine’s Day weekend! Kristi’s father called me after Ryan asked him for her daughter’s hand in marriage. He and his wife were coming from Maine to visit Charleston and Ryan’s family, and only the men knew about the plans to surprise Kristi with a ring during a family outing to a Lowcountry landmark, Boone Hall Plantation.

I had mixed feelings about coordinating with Kristi’s dad (since he was neither the proposer nor recipient), but I appreciated his thinking that a photographer would help them remember the special day! We talked through the logistics, including Kristi’s sister’s last-minute plan to fly into town the morning of the proposal. After we chatted more, it made good sense to leave the moms out of this. We agreed if they knew, they would probably act more giddy or be more stressed about what everyone was wearing, and the secret cover could have been blown!

Thankfully, it all worked perfectly. The group arrived at Boone Hall for a leisurely tour, Kristi’s sister’s taxi from the airport was right on time, so she hung out with me. The guys texted a couple of pics so I’d know who I was looking for as I hung out stealthily among the flowers. When their crew entered the big gate (made famous in “The Notebook” where Ryan Gosling’s character came to the rich girl’s home), I stopped snapping the birds and bees and captured Ryan’s sweet proposal. Kristi was floored, and their families were with them to share in the moment. Bravo, y’all!

After that didn’t happen, he really surprised her by dropping to one knee at the beautiful iron gate. Way to keep her guessing!

What a great morning for a surprise proposal! Thanks for choosing me to document it, Billy!

I maintain an annual photography pass for this dreamy location, and it’s great for portraits and family photos. Let me know if you’re interested in scheduling a session here. Thanks!

Meg and Chris are celebrating the first anniversary of their winter nuptials in historic Charleston this weekend, so it’s a great time to reflect on their beautiful Hibernian Hall wedding! I met Meg several years ago, when I first photographed her brother’s family and later their whole crew. They are such a fun, loving, warm-hearted bunch, so it was extra special to photograph her wedding day. Chris is a local musician, gracious and charming, and a perfect match for my friend, the elegant bride (whose breathtaking bridal portraits are worth a look).

Their Meeting Street affair started with portraits outside the Circular Congregational Church and a ceremony officiated by their friend. (I loved how she positioned the couple so they could see the congregation and so the guests to better see the couple exchange vows.) After the ceremony, everyone ambled down the street to Hibernian Hall, which has hosted a multitude of impressive events since 1840. It was a pleasure working with a great team of vendors to document such a magnificent day. Happy anniversary, y’all!

Navy glittery Kate Spade slingbacks for the ceremony were followed by confetti-glittered Keds for the dancy party. © Carolina PhotosmithKirstin and Rick’s Island House wedding was so colorful and fun! From the sunflowers and zinnias to her multicolored Kate Spade Keds and the cooler full of crazy good popsicles, the array of colors against a blue backdrop was so festive! Kirstin was such a glamorous bride, and Rick looked great in his colorful tie and kicky boutonnière. The riverside wedding was followed by a tented reception featuring gobs of delicious barbecue. Why settle on one cake when you can display several and see what your guests prefer?

Thanks to the great team that pulled the logistics together, despite a pre-game rain shower before the colorific festivities.
